IRC authentication
NickServ and SASL explained
Some networks or channels require an identified account before they allow access or bot requests.
NickServ
The client connects normally and then identifies the nickname with the network's registration service.
SASL
SASL authenticates during connection setup. Some networks prefer or require this method.
Use the method documented by the network
Do not enable both methods at random. Use only credentials you created or received directly for that IRC network.
Store credentials safely
- Open the local client or local IRC settings.
- Select the network.
- Enter only the required NickServ or SASL details.
- Reconnect and check the local log for confirmation.
Never include IRC passwords in support requests, screenshots or unredacted logs.
